Our Lady of the Rosary School uses the Jolly Phonics Scheme to support children developing their knowledge of phonlcs (letters and sounds).  Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 pupils are set for the daily timetabled sessions held each morning. Parents are informed of the phase their child is working on at least twice a year.
Outlined below are the 6 Phases.

Phase 1 -  (Nursery/Reception) Children to find rhyming words and make up jingles of words that began with the same sounds, e.g. Baby Bertha buys big balloons. Children can sound talk words into sounds, e.g. “cat” is “c” “a” “t”.

Phase 2 -  (up to six weeks Reception) Children will be taught to recognise, read and write the 23 sounds of the alphabet. The children will be able to put the sounds together to make words (blend) e.g. “m” “a” “t” “mat” and break down the sounds in words (segment) e.g. “not” “n” “o” “t”. To be able to read and write key and tricky words.

Phase 3 - (up to twelve weeks Reception) Children will be taught to recognise, read and write the sounds that have 2 letters, e.g. sh, ch, th. Children will be able to name the sounds and letter names. To build up putting the sounds together to make words and breaking word down, e.g. “shock” “thick” Children will be introduced to two syllable words e.g. carpark, farmyard.

Phase 4 - (up to six weeks Reception) To keep working on multi syllabic words, e.g. desktop, lunchbox. To be able to put together and break down CVCC (consonant, vowel, consonant, consonant) words, e.g. camp, bank. To be able to put together and break down CCVCC, CCCVC and CCCVCC words, e.g. trend, scrap, scrunch.

Phase 5- (throughout Year 1) To introduce new sounds- the different ways of pronouncing sounds previously learnt in Phase Two and Three, e.g. “ai” and “ay” make the same sound but are spelt differently. The children will learn which sound to use when reading and writing words. The children will be taught alternative pronunciations for letters, e.g. “i” in the words “fin” and “find” makes different sounds.

Phase 6 - (throughout Year 2) The children will be taught word-specific spellings e.g. when sounds can be spelt in more than one way, children learn which words take which spellings e.g. see/sea”, “bed/head/said” Spelling of words with prefixes and suffixes, and teaching of the past, present and future tenses.
